What I've learned Blogging

Tha' Jewels

My New Favorite Shoes

I was reading Style Klutz the other day and she was talking about how taking pictures of herself for her blog has revealed her love of black and grey. I must admit I realized the same thing ( I was shocked to look in my closet and see all that black and the various shades of grey I've accumulated) but I also found something else. My style is much more trendy and edgy than I ever thought. Reading some of the other blogs I see blazers, slacks and such. I guess I didn't realize how far removed I am from the cooperate / office life. As a hair stylist and boutique owner I really do get to march to the beat of my own drummer. I just didn't realize how much so until recently. That brings me t today's look. This is my take on holiday chic. This is not for a formal gathering, it's more of a casual, comfortable yet chic and totally glam look. Or at least my take on it he he! Big jewelry and purple tights make this outfit pop. While the ruffled sweater give just a touch of romance and femininity. The all black always slims and make you look pulled together. What is your style? What do you look in your closet and see. Take a few pictures of yourself, what do you see? Would you like to change some things or are you lovin' what you see? I'd love to hear your feed back.

Belt it UP!

If there is one thing you can tell about me by reading my blog, it's that I LOVE belts. I just LOVE what they can do for an outfit. I often use belts in my pictures of my vintage pieces to update a shirt or dress and to show the versatility of a piece. A belt can quickly add style and give a different look to an outfit. You can wear a belt right under the breast to create an empire look, this look will help to camouflage the tummy while creating clean feminine lines. A belt can also be worn at your natural waist to accentuate your curves and create a polished look. Also, cardigans, sweaters and jackets can also be belted to instantly update their look. And don't forget the hips. Wearing a belt on the hips, weather on top of an over sized tee or on top of a fitted dress, creates a stylist and edgy new dimension while being quite slimming. Don't be afraid to move the buckle, twist it to the side to create an exciting and unique look. So go ahead and give it a whirl. Try all kinds of belts, wrap belts, skinny belts, thicker belts or what ever your fancy, just try one! Try it up higher than usual, then try it in the middle and lastly push it down on your hips for a different feel. See how adding a belt here or there will add miles to your wardrobe!

More Winterizing

Well as you can see nothing is safe! I'll winterize almost anything. Now this little number is one of my favorite summer mini-dresses but today it served as a tunic. I layered it over some black leggings and my favorite new cheap brown boot ( AJ Wright, $16.99! WOOOHOOOO!) Sorry, I had to get that out, now back to the outfit. I put a chunky brown sweater warmth and a scarf for some pizazz! I also could have layered a turtle neck or a long sleeve shirt inset the dress for more warmth. As you can see almost anything can be winterized so get in your closet and start winterizing, it stretches your wardrobe and your dollar!

BoHo Chic

MMMMMMM, I found this picture and I was immediately put into a trance! I'm in LOVE! I cannot deny it, I LOVE everything about this look. Well almost everything, I would have put on a high heel fringed boot instead of flats. Otherwise from the vibrancy of the turquoise dress to the richness of the rust colored coat to the perfection of the clutch, I find this look to be utterly delectable! I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I do.

Vintage Love

I just finished taking pictures for my online store http://www.honeychildsstyle.etsy.com/. Here are a few items I will be listing. I get so excited putting together different looks that show how vintage clothing is so relevant to today's fashion. I absolutely adore the red shift dress it reminds me of Michelle Obama for some reason. I can see it with a pair of basic black tights and a black patent leather platform stiletto. And I can soooo see the black ruffled dress with a sexy black knee boot and a vibrant fuchsia cardigan or maybe some purple tights and a hot little ankle bootie. What about that orange number? Is that boho chic or what? I would throw on a cropped jean jacket, a gorgeous scarf and a delicious chocolate high heeled mary jane with it. OH, the possibilities! What do you think? Can you guys come up with other ways to style these dresses?

Flowers in the Winter

Wearing floral prints in the winter can be a little tricky. It is, after all, winter and who is thinking about flowers in the winter? MEEEEEE! With it being so cold it's kinda nice to think of flowers blooming and warmer days. So, I decided to winterize this little number by adding tights and a pair of my favorite vintage boots in a vibrant red. I chose this dress to winterize because of it's dark color (black). It can be a little difficult (I'd say almost impossible) to do this with a lighter floral print on say, cream or beige, so save the pastel florals for the warmer months and stick with the richer colors for winter and fall. So you wanna try it? Are you bold enough to be a winter flower?

AHHHH SCARVES!!

I'm sorry for my absence, life got a little crazy. But I am back now with one of my absolute style obsessions: Scarves. Oh how I LOVE what a scarf can do for any outfit. They can be dressed up or down and they just add that instant "something". You know what I'm talking about, that touch of perfection. Ah, the extra drama, the extra style, the extra flair! Knowing how to add that little extra is the difference between a look that is boring and a look that makes you stand out a crowd. I have included some pictures of our favorite celebs for inspiration. So let's get the wrapping ladies! Weather it's short, long, printed, plain, wool or silk you can't go wrong with a scarf!

Make the Most of Your Summer Wardobe in Winter

How can you make the most of your summer wardrobe year round? By making a few adjustments you can stretch it really far. In the winter months you can take those same summer dresses and tee shirts and layer a turtleneck or button down shirt underneath, put a cardigan or blazer on top and add some tights. A scarf can also add a a touch of warmth and a lot of style. From tee shirts to strapless and spaghetti strap dresses these little tricks can add miles to your wardrobe. Try putting a button down shirt or turtle neck under your favorite strapless dress. Or, perhaps put a long sleeve tee shirt under a short sleeve tee and add a jean jacket and scarf. There are so many options. So get in your closet and start stretching that wardrobe girl! Play around and try a little of this or that and I'm sure you'll find a quite a few pieces that can hang around through the winter.

What Is It About A Winter Coat?

Whether it's wool, vintage, fur, leather or some mixture of the before mentioned, there's something about a winter coat! It can add instant glamour or it can add an instant touch of chic. A coat can finish off your look with just the right touch of pizazz. Don't be afraid to add color to your coat wardrobe, nothing brightens up a drab winter day like a blast of vibrant color. Or a beautiful Vintage fur (I only buy vintage) to add a bit of glamour. I tend to lean more towards the dramatic side but you should feel free to dress your coat up or down anyway you like. Make your coat your own signature piece by adding a beautiful scarf, a broach (heck a few broaches)! How about adding a belt that didn't come with the coat or even wrapping a shawl around your shoulders on the outside of your coat and securing it with one of those lovely broaches? Get creative, play around and find a hot NEW way to wear your winter coat!

Thirty-Something Style

I just had to take a moment to shout-out my 30-somethings! Having celebrated my 37th birthday last Saturday, I got to thinking about how fashion has changed. "Thirty is the new twenty", now I don't know about that but thirty is definitely whole lot more fashionable than it used to be! And boy am I glad. Whether it's for a formal night out or for a casual day out with the girls, 30-something style is HOT!

Don't Ya Just Love Fall?!?!

Here are a couple items I'm about to list on my store HoneyChildsStyle.etsy.com. I can't help but to LOVE the warm rich colors of fall or the beauty of a scarf draped ever so effortlessly. Effortlessly, HA! Fashion is NEVER as effortless as it seems but it can definitely be made a lot simpler. To pull off that chic fall look you'll need a couple of things. You're going to want to have some warm rich colors ( think burnt orange, moss green, or mahogany brown), a beautiful scarf draped to ward off the chill and a warm coat or sweater to wrap up in and Viola'! You'll not only look oh so "Fall Chic" in your warm fall colors and you'll stay warm too!

What I've Learned about Shoes

Aren't they beauties? Can you believe they almost met Purple Heart? That's right I was going to give these shoes away and I was totally heart broken about it. I absolutely hate to have to give away shoes that I would buy again in another size, just because they're a little snug. But, Alas, such is life! I began to prepare my heart for the separation......and then, out of no where...It's a Bird! It's a Plane! It's my Shoe Repairman! Now, I always knew you could get a heel replaced and get them polished and all, but I didn't know that you could stretch shoes and have the calf area of boots extended on boots that are a little snug. I actually got some boots done too but they won't be ready until next week, I make sure to keep you posted! Mean while, I am sooo pleased with the results. My heart is aflutter with joy! I can keep them! Thank you Mr. Shoe Repairman. Thank you!

So before you go getting rid of some much loved shoes or boots because they've grown a little snug, find your local shoe repairman and see what he can do. You too might be able to avoid a heartbreak.

Have You Seen Your Sense of Style

Where is your sense of style? When was the last time you saw it? What was it wearing?!? LOL!! I know, I know veeery funny right? But seriously, sometimes we loose our way when it comes, not only to our sense of style concerning fashion, but our own personal sense of self. The reality is that our sense of self(or lack there of) is reflected in what we wear and how we wear it. When is the last time you felt truly radiant? What was it that made you feel like you simply glowed? How do you tap into that inner glow and reflect it in what you wear?

The answers can seem to elude us at times. Whenever I pick up a magazine there are so many options. Every one seems to have their ideas of what's "in" and what's out. And I love a trend as much as the next gal but really, who can keep up? Who even wants to? Trends are great and they keep the world of fashion a buzz with fresh and new ideas BUT they shouldn't dictate what you HAVE to wear. The key is to be able to take bits and pieces from a trend that work for you. There are things that you and only you know about yourself that no trend or fashion magazine can tell you. That's why YOUR sense of self is YOUR most important fashion accessory. Understanding your own personal style is foundational in building a wardrobe that reflects the beautiful person YOU are.

Let me use myself as an example. I'm a Hair and Fashion Stylist and I own a online Vintage Boutique. I'm an artsy and creative person and I work from home . I am drawn to vintage, romantic, flowing, sexy, creative and unique clothing. I don't like to iron, I go out alot, I'm extremely free spirited and I like to be comfortable but i also want to feel like a sexy, beautiful head turner at the same time . HMMMM, how can I pull that off? So what does my wardrobe look like? Well, my pictures above can give you a taste of that. I feel comfortable in my wardrobe and, most importantly, I feel like my most beautiful self in it. As you can see having my own personal trademark style is very important to me. Doesn't my confidence just shine through?

So, what about you? Are you up to finding your sense of self? Wanna find her and get her an new outfit or two? Take a few minutes today and ask yourself, "How do I want to feel when I get dressed?" Is it sexy, professional, bohemian, casual, the list can go on and on. Take the time to list three things you would like to feel when you get dressed and then think of small things that you can do to achieve your goal . You can do it! Your most beautiful self is inside and she's just waiting to get her glow on!

A New Day

Here are a few pieces that I am listing in the store. I'm really excited about everything. I am so excited and scared at the same time. This is all so new. The store is new, the blog is new, heck I'm new!!! I'm newly married and on Saturday I'll be 37. Time and life just keep going. I remember a time when I could'nt imagine what life would hold. Where would I go?

The day was November 17, 2006. It started as normal as any other day BUT it ended with me being a widow. I had no idea that life could or even would get any better. I was trully crushed. I could never imagine love or happiness again. I did'nt know who I was or where I was going. I was utterly lost and imagined I'd always be that way. But her I am, finding my way in this new life and finding that I am so happy. Not just that I married the most WONDERFUL man but that I am finding my way and my passion. I TRULLY feel blessed and I am going to take my time and drink it in. As I draw closer to the anniversary of the day that my life changed forever I will remember it with some tears but I will also know that a beautiful new me has been born out of that time. I have now even more courage to reach for the things that I want in this life and enough life experience to appreciate what is around me. I LOVE my life and that in itself is the gift.

HoneyChildsStyle

Hello welcome to HoneyChildsStyle. This is a place where I continually search out what makes me feel beautiful inside and out. I absolutely LOVE fashion but I also think life is bigger than that. How I feel about myself is more important than how I look is my ultimate belief. Now, don't get me wrong I really, really LIKE to look good but I just want to feel as good, if not better than I look. I want my sense of style to reflect ME. So my philosophy is that if I get to know and love me on the inside FIRST the outside is gravy! LOL!

Speaking of me, well here's a little bit about ME! I'm a newly married mom and a widow all at once (WHEW that's alot already LOL!). I'm also an old hair stylist (16 years) and a fledgling blogger and vintage boutique owner. Two of my greatest passions are self improvement and fashion. Being my best and looking my best are important to me. That' why I started this blog. I have seen alot of things in my life and I've missed some things. I am learning everyday. I am constantly evolving on the inside and on the outside. One thing I've learned for sure is that life is about the journey not the destination so I better enjoy the trip!!
